Greenworks AB have developed a vertical garden panel which supplies ecosystem services in urban environments. Greenworks AB is now focusing on producing these vertical garden panels completely out of biobased material and has so far managed to find biobased alternatives to all but one component: growth media for plant root systems.
A consortium has been formed to investigate the ability to produce a biobased product that can replace this component. The most basic demands on growth media for plant root systems is to provide a solid network which absorbs water.
Other demands which determine if a growth media is suitable for use in garden panels is pH and durability. Ash from biomass combustion and biocarbon from pyrolysis of biomass are potential biobased raw materials for a product which can be used for growth media. This project will investigate if these materials can meet the basic demands to function as growth media and thereby bringing the product to TRL 4.

Budget & time plan
The project’s budget is 1 015 000 MSEK and the project runs during six months – between November 2020 and April 2021.
